The 'Matrix' star Keanu Reeves was going through a bad patch for quite sometime. And that's when 'John Wick' happened, kick starting a second phase to his career. The film had some rad action scenes, inspired from anime and traditional martial arts. Keanu blended well in with the film too. And critics were pleased at the overall package. And the film did a good business, considering the measly budget it was made on. John Wick definitely gave a hint that it could be the first of a franchise. And from the reports, John Wick 2 is happening and is at it's early stages. John Wick is already moving on to acquire a status of a modern cult.
John Wick was a debut attempt by the duo David Leitch and Chad Stahelski. And here is something Chad had said in an interview about their approach towards a possible sequel, “If there’s great action but you have a character that no one likes and doesn’t have charisma, you’re not going to watch it. Look at any great action star, whether it’s Harrison Ford or Liam Neeson or Robert Downey Jr., pick a name. You love the guy first. Good action, bad action, you just love them in action. So we want to make sure we have a story and a character that everybody loves and then we’ll dress it with action that we promise will be awesome. “
And from another latest reports, Keanu Reeves has joined the cast of “The Neon Demon', a horror thriller. Though not much details about his character has been known yet, it sounds totally cool. The film is directed by Nicolas Winding Refn. He is well known for directing the 2011 film 'Drive', starring Ryan Gosling in the lead. 'Drive' received overwhelming response from the critics and audience alike. Keanu's 'Knock Knock' premiered at this years Sundance film festival to generally positive response from the critics. It is a horror thriller too.
As far as David and Chad are concerned, they have already made talks with the Universal Pictures to direct 'Cowboy Ninja Viking', starring Chris Pratts. Apparently the studio house is so pleased with the duo's debut attempt, 'John Wick'. They think this film needs the exact treatment as that of the action thriller starring Keanu Reeves. But nothing is conformed so far. So if David and Chad take this up, John Wick 2 may probably get a delay. But the fans would appreciate the other way around. They want John Wick 2 asap. A very reasonable need indeed.
Keanu Reeves is having one helluva come back. And it's so great to see him back. John Wick 2, The Neon Demon and Knock Knock are definitely some cool films to look forward to.
An online campaign has been launched by activists enraged at the glamorisation of sexual abuse in the upcoming controversial yet much-awaited movie adaptation of the infamous book Fifty Shades of Grey.
Up to 6,000 people have offered their support in the form of a Facebook 'like' to the “50 Dollars not 50 Shades” initiative that urges film lovers to donate $50 (the average cost of a film night) for charities supporting abused women. "The money you would have spent on movie tickets and a babysitter or movie tickets, popcorn and drinks will go towards serving victims of abusive relationships like the one glamorised in the Fifty Shades series. Hollywood doesn't need your money; abused women do”, is found quoted at the homepage of the website.
Protesters argue that Anastasia Steele (played by Dakota Johnson), one of the main protagonists in the book as well as the movie, and who enters into a BDSM relationship with a youthful business magnate Christian Grey, is a victim of sexual and physical abuse.
The recent campaign that demands the boycotting of the movie is backed by renowned activist groups including 'Stop Porn Culture' and the 'National Centre on Sexual Exploitation'.
More than 3,000 people also responded via twitter using the hashtag '#50dollarsnot50shades'; a number incomparable to those who enjoyed the female author E.L. James' erotic romance franchise which serves as the basis for the movie. The trilogy was translated in more than 50 languages and sold more than a 100 million copies round the world.
Natalie Collins, a British activist and one of those leading the campaign against the movie told 'The Independent': "A lot of the criticism of our campaign is that there's nothing wrong with BDSM – we're not saying there is. But people within the BDSM community are outraged by how the book portrays their lifestyle. This book romanticises a perpetrator of abuse."
The movie, however, is all set to release on Valentine's Day.
It's when a mission impossible film releases that people say “Wow,Tom Cruise still got it!”. Each film in the series have him doing insane stunts, and the best part is that he never uses a body double. Tom Cruise is the ultimate daredevil in the business. And MI5 already made a wave when a leaked photo surfaced on the internet, apparently revealing Tom doing a very dangerous plane stunt. In MI4 he did an unbelievable rope stunt from the tallest building in the world, the Burj Khalifa. This is why people love him. This is why he is one of the greatest celebrities in the world. In Japan they even have a 'Tom Cruise Day'! Now, how crazy is that?!. That's Tom Cruise for you.
So fans literally had a heartbreak when Mission Impossible 5 didn't release last Christmas. They were eagerly waiting for it. And now the news is here that it got postponed to July 31 this year. That is just a few more months now. The film is directed by Christopher McQuarrie. This is Christopher's fourth collaboration with Tom. They had earlier worked together for Valkyrie, Jack Reacher and Edge of Tomorrow. While he just co-wrote Valkyrie and Edge of Tomorrow, he wrote and directed Jack Reacher himself.. Jack Reacher was well received by the public. They loved the action and the characterization of the title character. MI5 seems safe in his hands.
So July it is. Mission impossible films are always worth waiting for. So hopefully this would be no different.
Oscar nominated drama film ‘Whiplash’ to be released in Indian on February 20th. That is just two days ahead of this year’s Academy Award function.
The film has been nominated for five awards, including one for the best motion picture. J.k.Simmons, nominated in the best supporting actor category, had already won it for the film in the Golden Globes. He gave his career best performance in the film as ‘Terence Fletcher’, a fearsome music conductor at the prestigious ‘Shaffer Conservatory music school’. A well deserving act from the thespian. And Mikes Teller matched up to him with a compelling performance as ‘Andrew Neiman’, a first year Jazz student at the school.
‘Whiplash’ is a must watch. A very captivating film on music and human emotions. A film that has to be watched for the terrific performances from its cast. Mikes Teller truly deserved a nomination at the Oscars. It is sure among one of the unbelievable Oscar snubs this year. But J.K.Simmons has a huge chance to make it big at the Academy Awards.
So do watch this film when it reach the theatres near you. Because if you don’t, it’s your loss.
‘Mortdecai’ is turning out to be one of the worst openings for a Johnny Depp film. The actor’s career is at an all time low, with three back to back box office bombs including this one. He really needs to pick it up to stay along the race. Right now he is almost out of the A-list. And this is so saddening considering the heck of a talent he is.
Box office analysts claim that the film may not even reach a $10 million in the opening weekend, which is pathetic considering a $60 million budget. The film is currently at the ninth place, closing in just behind ‘Selma’. Even Jennifer Lopez’s ’Boy next door’, an R rated thriller managed to finish in the second place. And meanwhile, ‘American Sniper’ continues its epic run at the box office, finishing in first.
Johnny Depp, despite his back to back duds remain one of the most followed celebrities across the globe. His fan base is huge. Even the films that did poor in the American box office, had managed to do really good on outside. So this outside fan base might just save ‘Mortdecai’ from an even disastrous failure.
‘Captain Jack Sparrow’ is Depp’s most iconic role ever. This is what made him a global phenomenon. All the films in the ‘Pirates of the caribbean’ series were huge box office hits. And this role could be his golden opportunity to reach the top once again, because the captain will be back with ‘Dead men tell no tales’. The film is currently in pre-production and won’t reach us until 2017. That’s two more years. But he has quite a few projects in between. His next is ‘Black Mass’, a crime drama based on a book of the same name, in which he will act alongside Kevin bacon, Benedict Cumberbatch and Joel Edgerton. And cast wise, this film looks very promising.
All we can do is to hope for the best because we don’t want to see this incredible talent getting wasted on unworthy roles. This man has given us unforgettable characters. Those roles couldn’t have gotten any better than that. We need him back, owning each role he does.
Akshay Kumar’s ‘Baby’ gets a ban in Pakistan. The espionage thriller, which released to the public today, has been banned by the Pakistan censor board citing that it portray Muslims in a negative way.
”Censor boards in Islamabad and Karachi have decided to ban the film because it portrays a negative image of Muslims and the negative characters in the film also have Muslim names. CDs and DVDs of the film have also been banned in Islamabad. The company has taken a similar stance on this issue and will not go-ahead with this.”, said Dawn newspaper. And Fakhr-e-Alam, Chairman of the Censor board, went onto tweet like this, “Just censored the film BABY. A poor propaganda film basically saying all Muslims r terrorists & Pakistan harbors them. Disappointed. BANNED it”
Ok that was unfortunate. But despite this disappointing welcome from Pakistan, ‘Baby’ opened up to generally positive response from the Indian critics. Most of them praised it for its fast paced narrative and an impressive performance from Akshay. ‘Baby’ travels much along the routes of undercover films from Hollywood. Speaking of which, this could be the first legit undercover espionage thriller from India. We seriously need more of this kind of stuff.
This film gives an insight to global terrorism and the Indian spy mechanisms behind the tackle. Neeraj pandey, director of this film, had earlier in an interview said that this film will not be ‘anti-pakistan’ or ‘anti-muslim’. But no one can be blamed. Over the years, Pakistan has become synonymous to the term ‘terrorism’. The government has failed to counter the growth of terrorist groups within the nation. Yes it’s quite hard to synch with the fact that one’s nation is being looked down under suspicion. It’s quite sad.
And it’s a hard blow to the producers. Because Pakistan is a major market for Bollywood. It sells like hot dogs in Pakistan. They love our films and they love stars like we do. So it’s a real monetary issue for the producers. Though the film may go onto make huge profit anyways, it could have been much more and sweeter, had it been released in Pakistan.
Movies like Terminator depict machines that are smarter than humans, machines that can think and act as humans. Will there come a day when they machines take control of everything and make us humans its slaves? My answer is NO and why? As humans, we have a special and unique capability that makes us different from machines – emotional intelligence. Emotional intelligence is what makes us capable of taking decisions based on our emotional quotient. Machines if ever is to achieve the level of artificial intelligence that exceed ours, it will not take decisions on an emotional level. This has both positive and negative perspectives.
If these machines interconnected by the privilege we call us internet starts to act together and evolves on to a level that makes them a step higher than us humans, there is a catch. Humans found internet and we know how to stop the information flow. Information flow attributes for the main strength that machines will ever possess. If we stop the flow, they are as good as dead. Artificial intelligence cannot pass a limit without emotional intelligence. There will be a point at which an action based on emotional intelligence must be required by machine to act. At such a situation, artificial intelligence becomes useless.
Without an emotional background, there is no need for the machines to take over the control from humans in the first place. Just artificial intelligence will not make them monsters one day. Sure, the machines will evolve so much that they will take decisions by their own. All for completing the work / function they are assigned to. For now there is no worry of an machine domination of our world so you can go and sleep peacefully. Your little robot wont shoot you for sure.
Simon Pegg has been roped in to co-write the script for the film along with Doug Jung. So now he has two important tasks to do, to give out his best in front of the camera as well as behind it. Simon Pegg is the one doing the role of eccentric engineer ‘Scotty’ in the franchise. And he proved to be very good in the first two films. And he will have no trouble reprising the role in this final installment to J.J.Abrams’s Star Trek trilogy. While J.J.Abrams directed the first two films, he backed himself out from this one. He is currently busy with his ‘Star Wars’ film. Roberto Orci , being roped in initially to direct, too left the project. And now as per the reports, the Fast & Furious director Justin Lin is going to direct the film.
Simon Pegg, as we all know, is an amazing actor. But he is a great writer too. He co-wrote the much acclaimed ’Cornetto trilogy’ with Edgar Wright. Also Simon played the lead roles in these films directed by Edgar Wright. Also he is a self proclaimed fan of Star Trek series. So it helps being familiar with the franchise while writing.
There’s a very little chance that Simon is going to fuck this up. So it’s basically a great call from the house. You go Simon!
First it was Tom Hardy. Now Jake too nodded a no to the squad. And the suicide squad remains short of a member, that too the leader of the squad. Fans are a bit disappointed right now. Tom Hardy and Jake Gyllenhaal are two wonderful actors, totally capable of executing the role of ‘Rick Flag’ to perfection. There are not much actors out there with the potential as these guys. The production house is pacing it up with a possible beginning set at this August. So hopefully we may soon get a final word on this missing element in the squad.
Gyllenhaal just upped his graph with a terrific performance in last year’s ‘Nightcrawler’. But it almost came out so disappointing for him as well as his fans that he got snubbed at the Oscar nominations. He deserved a nomination hands down. But no snubs, no nothing can keep him out of the race. He has a tight schedule this year with lot of promising projects, like ‘Southpaw’, ‘Everest’ and ‘Demolition’.
‘Rick Flag’ is the leader of the squad. And we need someone who can play the leader very well. Because it’s going to be tough matching to the likes of Will Smith and Jared Leto. We need someone solid and charismatic. And it can be assured that WB will rep in the perfect man to play the role. But we can’t wait to have a confirmation asap. Hope they’ll make it quick.
